Living in Ireland

Political life in the Irish Labour Party

Today, readers, we want to talk to you about political life in Ireland. Of course, this is a vast and very detailed topic, but we have plenty of time to tell you a little bit about this important aspect of life not just in Ireland, but in all countries.

The reason we decided to write a story on this topic was because of an event that we visited recently. But we will start at the beginning.

On the 12th of May 2013, the Irish Labour Party celebrated the 97th anniversary of the execution of the party's founder, James Connoly, who was also one of the leaders of the Easter Rising in 1916. The uprising however, as many of you probably know, failed.

We've already talked a bit about this uprising when we told you about Kilmainham Gaol Prison, where the 16 leaders of the uprising, including James Connolly, were executed. These national heroes are buried in a cemetery in The Church of the Sacred Heart. Since the 19th century, this church was reformed into a church of the Irish defence forces.

The church is almost adjacent to the National Museum of Decorative Arts & History, which was built on an area full of past military barracks.

We are telling you so many details about this place, so as you don’t miss the opportunity to visit the church and the burial place of the heroes of the Easter Rising if you decide to visit the National Museum of Ireland. In fact, in 1963, this cemetery was visited by U.S. President John Kennedy.

Now we will tell you a bit more about the Labour Party. In 2012, the Labour Party celebrated 100 years of being ‘in the service of the people’ and is currently one of the most important parties of Ireland. It adheres to the social - democratic movement and is a driving force behind the Irish Trade Union movement.

At the 2011 elections, the party won 37 seats in parliament out of 166 parliamentary seats. And that same year, during the presidential elections in Ireland, a member of the Labour Party called Michael D Higgins became the President of Ireland. He became the second president to represent the Labour Party. The first was Mary Robinson, who was the Irish President from 1990 to 1997.

Now we will describe our meeting with the Labour Party. We will note that the current leader of the Labour Party, Eamon Gilmore, was present at this meeting. He is currently the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade in the Irish Parliament.

Not going into, for now, the finer details about the Irish Labour Party, we would like to note that this party now pays great attention to the adaptation of immigrants to life in Ireland. And not just to adapt so as to give an immigrant a job and a home, but to adapt him or her as full citizens, who will have an opportunity to engage in the political affairs concerning Ireland.

So now, there are a few places reserved especially for immigrants who want to engage in political affairs in the Irish Parliament. However, winning these seats in parliament isn’t easy, as the people there have to change every six months.

In conclusion, we would like to say that almost anyone can try to obtain a seat in the Irish Parliament, and we are going to try and take full advantage of this opportunity. We hope that it will be as easy as visiting the Residence of the Irish President.
